LA Animal Services Serves Up Safety Tips to
Keep Your Pets Safe This Thanksgiving Holiday

Los Angeles, November 25, 2020 – Although Thanksgiving will be celebrated a little differently this year, many popular and favorite Thanksgiving Day foods will still find their way to lunch and dinner, prompting agile and creative dogs and cats to sneak a special treat from the kitchen counter, trash, or even the dining room table.

To help keep you and your animal companions safe this Thanksgiving Holiday, LA Animal Services is serving up the following tips:

  • Don’t share your Thanksgiving meal with your pet. Dogs and cats can suffer very serious and sometimes fatal consequences from turkey bones, too much rich and fatty foods, and just plain overeating.

  • Keep alcoholic beverages and wine-filled glasses away from pet’s reach. Alcohol can cause your pet’s blood sugar and blood pressure to drop dangerously.

  • No chocolate for your four-legged friend. Chocolate can be toxic to dogs — even the smallest amount of baking chocolate can be toxic to pets.

  • Treat your pet with special treats. Buy your animal companion special dog and cat treats made especially for them and that are good for them. Don’t forget to reduce your furry friend’s regular meals that day to make up for the special treats.

  • Quick action can save lives. If you believe your pet has eaten something they shouldn’t have, call your veterinarian or local emergency pet clinic immediately.

  • Ensure your pet is licensed and microchipped with up-to-date contact information. If for any reason your pet becomes lost, ensuring they have a collar with a current license and/or ID tag on them and a microchip that’s registered with your most up-to-date contact information, will help reunite you with your companion.
