LA Animal Services: Welcome the Year of the Dog at all Six L.A. City Shelters
Los Angeles, February 15, 2018 – Los Angeles City Council President Herb Wesson and Los Angeles Animal Services celebrate the Lunar New Year with waived adoption fees at all L.A. City shelters. To kick off the Year of the Dog, all six of the city’s animal shelters will open their doors with free adoptions on all dogs and cats this Friday, February 16, 2018.
“At L.A. City Shelters, we have love that comes in all sizes, ages, and breeds, ready to be adopted into a great home this Lunar New Year,” said Brenda Barnette, LA Animal Services General Manager.
A special presentation will take place at City Hall to mark the beginning of the Lunar New Year. Lion dancers, tai chi performers, drummers and an in-person dog adoption will comprise the celebration. Members of the public are invited to attend the festivities, which will begin at 10 a.m. in City Council Chambers.
“The Lunar New Year is a time for togetherness, gratitude and appreciation,” said Los Angeles City Council President Herb Wesson. “There is no better way to kick-off the Year of the Dog than welcoming a furry friend into the family.”
L.A. City shelter pets are vaccinated, spayed or neutered, and microchipped. While the dog adoption fees are waived, there will be a $20 dog license fee applied for LA City residents. Shelter locations can be found online at LAAnimalServices.com/shelters.

Herb J. Wesson, Jr. has served as the President of the Los Angeles City Council since November 2011 and has represented Council District 10 since 2005. Wesson is the first African-American to hold the position of Council President in the city’s history and has been re-elected three times to lead the city’s legislative body. According to a report by the L.A. Area Chamber of Commerce, under Wesson’s leadership Council District 10 has the second highest private employment growth rate in the city, is setting the trend for mixed-use developments citywide and boasts an increase in local business activity. Council President Wesson has been happily married for more than 35 years and is the proud father of four sons and a grandfather to three grandchildren.
